Tia Maria Copper Mine by the Numbers [Infographic]
Although a new copper mine could mean more profit for the country and more employment in the region, the Tia Maria mine has been the target of several protests in the last years. And violent ones, as well. The project is being developed near Arequipa, in Peru, by the Arizona-based mining company Southern Copper and is currently one of the industry’s most expensive and ambitious plans.
Although the development of the mine was halted in 2011, the work at the mine might restart in January 2014, after the environmental assessments are approved, and this means production could start in March. In the meantime, check this infographic with the most important numbers about Tia Maria.
